Cover-Motorhome

Should you cover your motorhome in the winter months?

Some owners are confused about whether you should cover your motorhome in the winter months.

Owners understand that if their motorhome is not being used in the summer, they should cover it to protect it from our harsh Australian sun.

But is it also important to cover it in the winter?

If it’s being stored outside… then, yes, you should cover your motorhome. Here’s why:

Protection from damage

Ultimately, the purpose of a motorhome cover, is to protect your motorhome from the damage that can be caused just while it’s sitting there.

UV Sun Damage

The sun can cause damage to the exterior body of your motorhome, even in the winter months.

The exterior bodywork can fade and crack with extended exposure to the sun.

But also, it can cause damage to the inside with the sun fading your furniture, furnishings and floor coverings.

Water – Rain, Snow & Hail

A cover can prevent damage from water, whether that be from rain, snow or hail.

With a cover on your motorhome, you are protecting it from water getting in to any hidden areas and causing water damage.

A cover will also help to protect your pride and joy from hail damage.

Dirt Build-Up & Scratches

With a cover on your vehicle you won’t have to worry about a build-up of dirt, dust and leaves, especially on the roof. And your investment will be protected from minor damage from things like stones flicking up from the lawnmower or small branches from overhead trees.

All of this does well to protect your motorhome from premature aging, allowing you to spend less time cleaning and polishing your RV, and maximising its resale value.

Features of a Good Cover

You could pick up any flimsy cover on eBay, but if you want something that will actually protect your investment, these are the main features you need to look for:

Breathable Fabric and Vents

The type of material your cover is made out of is dependent on whether it’s main purpose is for winter or summer storage, but whichever type you choose, it should be made from a breathable fabric and have vents to prevent mold and mildew.

UV Protection is also a must.

Even in the winter, you will need UV protection for your motorhome, so it’s important to make sure that it’s made from a fabric that effectively blocks the suns damaging UV rays.

Can be Cinched in and Tied Down

For outside storage, it is important to make sure that the cover can be tightened around the motorhome so that in windy conditions the cover doesn’t billow or cause damage to the motorhome from flapping against it.

Access panels are Important

Sometimes you need to access the interior of your motorhome while in storage, so it’s really helpful to have zippered access panels on the side of the cover.

With these simple tips, you will be able to find a motorhome cover that will protect your home on wheels while you are not using it, whether that be in summer or winter conditions.
