Best 4X4 Motorhome Fishing Destinations

Love fishing as much as you love 4WD adventures? Australia is home to some of the best fishing spots available, which also make for great off road trips. Wondering where to take your 4WD next? Should you try your hand at Lake Moondarra in Mount Isa or perhaps a journey to the Bournda National Park?

Below are some of the best 4×4 motorhome fishing destinations in the country.

Eyre Peninsula

The Eyre Peninsula is one of the best fishing destinations in South Australia. This region is known as ‘The Seafood Frontier’ with about 65% of Australia’s catch coming from the ocean right here. Some of the well-known spots include Venus Bay, Baird Bay, Locks Well, and Waterloo Bay among others.

On a good day, you’re likely to catch King George whiting, snapper, sweep, trevally, snook, salmon, tommy ruff, mulloway, garfish, flathead and squid. You can also go diving for razorfish and abalone, or blue swimmer crabs.

Mount Isa

Mount Isa is a serene outback destination in Queensland with plenty of freshwater fish. Explore two of Australia’s loveliest man-made lakes in the comfort of your 4WD: Lake Moondarra and Lake Julius.

At Lake Moondarra you’ll find long toms, catfish, and grunter with the occasional barramundi. Lake Julius on the other hand is home to the legendary black-flanked bruisers and you’re likely to come across plenty of grunters.

Cape York

Love anglers? Cape York is your ideal Australian fishing adventure. This destination is bound to satisfy both your four-wheeler and fishing needs. However, be wary during the wet season as the path may prove to be impassable.

Top End

Top End is home to some of the best fishing spots in Australia, along with its very popular Kakadu National Park. It’s the perfect trip for every thrill seeker. Come well-equipped and with a bit of luck, you might even be able to catch a fantastic barramundi in the Daly River, Mary River or the Adelaide River. During the February-May period, you could even see the legendary Barra Run-Off, where massive schools of barramundi meet at the river mouths.

Sapphire Coast

The Bournda National Park is home to some breathtaking scenery and makes for the perfect outdoor adventure, particularly if you’re one for off road trips and fishing. Throughout the Bournda and Tura beaches, the stretches of coast are blessed with beautiful sights as well as quite a few big fish. Sapphire Coast is a must-visit family adventure in your 4WD motorhome.

Moreton Island

Situated 40km east of the Port of Brisbane, Morenton is about 38km from north to south, 8km across at its widest and has about 420km of tracks. In other words, it works well for a 4×4 journey. Its annual Moreton Classic fishing competition goes over five days in mid-August every year, attracting more than 200 competitors.
