5 Outback Destinations for 4×4 Motorhomes
Planning for that great outdoor adventure in your 4×4 motorhome? Looking at your best options? Australia is home to some of the most amazing outback routes the great outdoors has to offer. So here are 5 outback destinations that are perfect for 4×4 motorhomes.
Cape York
indigenous communities, croc-infested rivers, ancient rainforest, red dusty landscapes and deserted beaches. Cape York has it all. Starting from Cairns, there are 2 routes you can take. The coastal route through Cape Tribulation, the Daintree Rainforest and the Bloomfield Track to Cooktown will be the more scenic route. This is the only place in the country where you can enjoy the beauty of tropical rainforests right next to the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef.
Of course, this journey will only be possible on your 4WD as a typical vehicle won’t be able to tackle the challenging conditions.
Gibbs River Road
The Gibbs River Road lies at the heart of the Kimberley region. The route spans 660km from Derby in the West all the way to Kununurra in the East. The trip makes for the perfect outdoor adventure with some stunning views on offer. The Gibbs River road is a long journey and can only be tackled by a well-equipped 4WD due to the rough environment. Additionally, even some of the attractions here like the Bungle Bungles will require a 4WD for you to enter.
Mount Augustus
It’s one of Australia’s natural wonders and it’s also the biggest rock in the world. Two and a half times bigger than Uluru, Mount Augustus is found in the Gascoyne region of WA, between Carnarvon and Meekatharra. The road around the base of the mountain is 49km long.
The Pilbara
Explore the splendour of the Karijini National Park and the oasis-like waterholes of Millstream Chichester National Park. Take your 4WD motorhome along scenic 4WD tracks with beautiful rivers you could camp next to. An underrated Australian landscape, this route is also home to the largest collection of rock carvings in the world found at the Burrup Peninsula.
Eyre Peninsula
Love the beach as much as your love taking your 4WD out? The Eyre Peninsula is Australia’s major seafood hub and it’s one of the most memorable beach holidays you can take. Of course, it’s not all about the beach either. There are several exciting road trips you can take through the Eyre Peninsula with the most notable being crossing the Nullarbor Plain. Feel like a safari? You can take a trip to the wilderness of the Gawler Ranges where you can set sights on beautiful red rock formations and a white salt lake, complemented by a variety of wildlife.
